Randell Design Group was approached to replace an existing dilapidated coastal bungalow on Bracklesham Beach in West Sussex with a modern beach retreat for a young sporty family who enjoy kite surfing and water sports. The design was very much tailored to the client’s brief for a weekend retreat with a first-floor lounge and large balcony providing expansive views across The Solent and a secluded ground floor open plan kitchen diner that opens out into a sheltered courtyard garden.
The house is arranged off an axial corridor and comprises four spacious bedrooms with two of those benefiting from clever spatial planning to gain sea views. The rooms at first floor extend up into the pitched roof spaces and the central corridor is flooded with daylight from the apex glazing above. The building exterior is traditional and unassuming from street level, but quickly begins to reveal touches of high-quality modern design as your enter the front courtyard, with a glazed oak-framed link walkway and modern flint wall contrasting the cedar ship lap exterior. The modern interior spaces with solid, wide plank oak flooring lead visitors through to the broad vistas at the rear framed by a wall of glass.
Having worked with the clients to design and their dream home, Randell Design Group then worked closely with the construction team to assist in delivering the quality that this sea front home deserves. The result is breath-taking and offers the clients a peaceful escape all year-round, from hot sunny days to brisk winter nights.
We love … the smell of the cedar siding in the tranquil courtyard, the extra-wide floorboards that were milled from a tree selected by the client, the annex building connected by walkway with lots of storage for wetsuits, the vast balcony with amazing sea views and so much more!
Our client says, “I thoroughly enjoyed designing a house with Randell Design Group and am sad the whole process has come to an end. It was an entirely collaborative approach and as a result I continue to absolutely love the house. It works better than I thought it would and I thought it was going to be amazing!”
